Are candles really as dangerous as people say?

My mother and father have terrified me about the use of candles, and even living in a house with a fireplace. Yet I meet people who have both and use them very safely. We started talking about them, when I considered moving into an apartment, and they went ballistic, with stories about dying children, and house fires. Now I'm terrified of both of them.
