What does Ambiguous ism mean? How does this apply to Shakespeares's sonnets?

This is only a guess: we know that they were written BY a man. Are they addressed to a WOMAN specifically? Or a Man? Or are some of them ambiguous by proclaiming love to a person whose gender we don't know?
