If man only wants to be independent, then he is only worried about himself. However, being interdependent on society shows that he is willing to help others and accept help from others, which builds community. Gandhi was big on kindness and acceptance of others, so by building community, man would be living Gandhi's ideals. If man is not social, he cannot realize his full potential or live a fulfilling life.
